Connecting to WiFi at a Third Party/Public Location

Occasionally, you may find yourself at an airport, restaurant, hotel, hospital, or other non-standard work location and needing to connect to WiFi.  Follow these steps below.

  1. Make sure your laptop is powered on and you are logged in, viewing the desktop.
  2. In the bottom-right corner, there should be a round globe icon - click on it to view available WiFi networks. Alternatively, go to Start --> Settings --> search "WiFi" and select "WiFi settings."
  3. Click on the desired WiFi network, then click Connect.  Enter the WiFi password, if applicable (you would be prompted at this step).
  4. Once the WiFi option states "Connected," you are successfully connected to the wireless network.
  5. At this point, if you are at a hotel or similar location, you may first need to open your web browser (e.g. Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, etc.), and accept/approve the terms/conditions of the hotel/other location before you will have internet access and be able to connect to the FMHC VPN.  This is called a captive portal. Example for Hilton hotels:
    1. You can simply select "Complimentary Standard Internet Access" to get connected, then click Next.

Example for the Cleveland Clinic - simply click the "Accept" button:

6. At that point, you can connect to the VPN as you normally do at home (via the Sophos Connect app) and receive the Duo prompt on your cell phone.
