Preparing to switch to a new computer may seem like a daunting task, but the FMHC IT team has streamlined the process to make for a smooth transition. Follow the steps below for each phase of the switch.
Planning to Switch
In preparation for receiving your new computer, you should run a Profile Backup. This will save all your desktop files & shortcuts, favorites/bookmarks from both Microsoft Edge & Google Chrome, and local documents to a "PC" folder in your U:/ drive. This backup will be used to transfer your files to your new computer.
You should run the backup as close to the time of your computer swap as possible to ensure the latest files are being saved. To run the backup, visit the intranet --> IT tab --> Self Service section and click Profile Backup. Then, click Run at the prompt. At the next message, click OK to proceed. You will receive a pop-up notifying you that the backup has completed.
Also, go to the Start menu --> Printers & Scanners and make note of the printers you have installed, including which printer is set as your default. You can use the Snipping Tool to take a screenshot of your list of printers so you have an easy record of them for later, if needed.
At this point, you are ready to make the swap.
Transitioning to the New Computer
When you receive your new computer, ensure that it is attached to the network then log in. From the Start menu, launch Outlook to set up your email first. Complete the Outlook setup wizard before proceeding.
Once Outlook is configured (it may take a few minutes to download all your emails from the server), you may navigate back to the intranet --> IT tab --> Self Service section and click Profile Restore. This will take the files you saved in the Profile Backup and restore them to the appropriate locations. Run at the prompt then click Yes to confirm you have first set up Outlook. You will receive a pop-up notifying you that the restore has completed.
You will now see your desktop icons restored, as well as your favorites/bookmarks in Microsoft Edge & Google Chrome. Any outdated Microsoft shortcuts may need to be deleted. For all Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), use the shortcuts found in the Start menu.
Continue to launch any other programs you may need to use. Submit a Service Desk ticket if you run into any issues opening a specific program or if there is an application missing that should be installed.
If you are a VPN user, test VPN connectivity and ensure you are able to connect to the network remotely.
