Changing Your Windows Password

Modified on Thu, Sep 28, 2023 at 9:50 AM

Your Windows password is valid for one year.  The week before your password is set to expire, you will begin receiving pop-ups asking you to change your password.  Ten days before expiration, you will receive a daily email alert until you change your password.  Follow the steps below to set a new one.

To change your password on a computer while in the office, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and choose "Change Password."

Enter your current password, then new password** twice to confirm it.

To change your password while logged on the VPN, do the following:

1. Close any applications that you have open, including Outlook and any web browsers

2. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete on your keyboard

3. Choose "Change Password"

4. Enter your current password

5. Enter your new password** and confirm it.

6. Rediscover the VPN network: Open the Sophos Connect app, disconnect and re-connect, then enter your new password at the prompt for credentials

The new password that you set will now be what you use to log into your computer.

**Your new password must meet the following requirements:

a. Minimum length of 14 characters

b. Contain at least 3 of the following 4 characteristics: Upper case letter, lower case letter, number, special character

c. Must start with a letter of the alphabet and cannot contain spaces

d. Cannot contain your login ID

e. You cannot reuse your previous 5 passwords

f. If you use Prologue, your password cannot contain an asterisk ( * )

If you are an Intune user (i.e. you have Outlook for email on your cell phone), you will need to go into Outlook and enter your new Windows password when prompted.  If you are not prompted, open the Outlook app --> tap your picture or initials in the top left corner --> Settings (gear icon at bottom left corner) --> under Mail Accounts, tap Office 365 --> scroll down to Reset Account and enter your new Windows password when prompted to log in.

4. Enter your current password

5. Enter your new password** and confirm it

6. Log off of you work computer and close the https://remote.ffl.net session

g. If you use MPC, your password cannot contain an asterisk ( * ) or the following characters: & : , { }, '=' > < ; ' [ ]

*Some keyboards have the "End" button highlighted in blue, meaning that this is a Function key.  So, if that is the case, and Ctrl-Alt-End does nothing, do a Ctrl-Alt-Fn-End instead to get to the screen to "Change a Password."

*If you are on a Mac/Apple computer/device, you likely do not have an Alt key.  To do the Ctrl-Alt-End sequence on a Mac, use Fn-Ctrl-Option-Del.
