Recovering a File on a Share Drive

Modified on Tue, May 31, 2022 at 12:20 PM

On occasion, a document may be accidentally moved, overwritten, or deleted from a share drive, like the G:\ or U:\ drive.  Fortunately, because these directories are on the network, they are backed up regularly (usually twice a day) to prevent loss of data.

To recover a file that is missing or needs to be restored to an earlier version, follow the instructions below.

  1. Navigate to the folder on G:\ or U:\ (or other share drive) where the document is supposed to be.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the blank space in the folder and select "Properties."
  3. In the Properties window, click the "Previous Versions" tab.
  4. A list will appear of all the backups that have been saved in about the last month*.
  5. Select the date of the backup from which you would like to restore the document and click Open.
    1. For example, if it is 3:00 pm and you would like to bring back a document from earlier that morning, you can select the folder backup from noon on that same day.
  6. The same folder directory will open as it appeared on the day and time of that backup.
  7. From there, copy/paste the document you want to restore into the current/live G:\ or U:\ drive folder.

*If you are looking for a document that was last backed up longer than a month ago, please submit a Service Desk ticket for the IT Engineering team.  It may still be recoverable.
